BLOCK OF THE MONTH – FEB/MAR 2015

Disappearing 4 patch

Use pastels of medium colors for this.  No brights or darks.  Use small prints, mottled prints or plain.  No large prints.

BE SURE TO USE A SCANT 1/4″ SEAM SO THE FINISHED BLOCK WILL BE THE PROPER SIZE.

Cut two 6 1/2″ white squares & two 6 1/2″ of the color you choose.  Sew into a 4 patch.  The block should measure 12 1/2″.

Please check.

001

Press all seams open.  This may seem strange, but most of the possible layouts to make the squares into a quilt involve the colored pieces meeting.  If you pressed toward one side, you would have a lot of layers of fabric meeting.

Cut the square 4 times as shown below.  Don’t move the squares between cuts.

Measure 5″ from the left side of the square and make the first cut.  Then measure 7 1/2″ from the left and make the second cut.  Measure 5″ from the bottom and make the third cut.  Measure 7 1/2″ from the bottom and make the last cut.

002

TURN EACH OF THE OBLONG PIECES SO YOUR BLOCK LOOKS LIKE THE FINISHED BLOCK BELOW.  EACH WHITE PIECE WILL BE AGAINST A COLORED PIECE.

Sew each row together being careful to match seams.  (Will be a little harder when seams are pressed open).  I KNOW YOU CAN DO IT.  Use pins.  Finished block should measure 11 1/2″.  Please check.
