June / July 2016 Block of the month
Holiday/Winter Crazy Quilt Square
1) Cut a 10.5” foundation square of muslin or similar plain fabric
2) Fussy cut from fabric the picture you will build your square around. 3 by 5 inches would work well. Now cut an angle off one corner to make it a 5 sided picture. Other options: print an item on printer fabric, applique an ornament or use your embroidery machine to stitch a snowman etc.
3) Baste or fuse this 5 sided piece to the center of 10.5 foundation slightly tilted .
4) Cut strips of fabric various widths 1.5 to 3 inches in width from holiday/winter, and solids to build your block
5) Sew strips of fabric log cabin style counter clock wise around your featured
5 sided piece, pressing after each strip. Trim any strips of fabric out of your
seam allowance as you go.

6) Measure when close to corners so your strip is wide enough. Try not to
have seams close to corner of square.
7) Give square a final press and turn over face down on cutting mat.
8) Following edges of foundation trim excess fabric away
9) If desired, carefully machine baste around perimeter of square less than a
quarter inch from edge.
10) Optional Add any crazy quilt stitching by machine or hand you may
wish. The winner can also do this when she assembles her quilt

We are making red and white or blue and white half square triangles to give to Tammy Lawson for the Quilts of Valor.
I passed out 20 packets of fabric at the QCG meeting. There was enough fabric in each to make 4 half square triangles. There was an error in the instructions which I corrected at the meeting. The fabric is to be cut into 6 1/2 squares.
If you would like to make additional squares for Quilts of Valor start with two 6 1/2″ squares either red and white or blue and white.
Draw a diagonal line across one square. Sew the two squares, right sides together making a scant 1/4″ seam on either side of the drawn line. Cut apart on the drawn line.
Press toward the dark fabric. You will have two half square triangles. Feel free to make as many as you want to.
We’ll give them to Tammy at the May meeting.
Thanks to all who participate.

FRIENDSHIP STAR This is a good way to use your scraps. It is really important to make a SCANT 1/4" seam when making this block. Cut four pieces of white and four pieces of various colors 4 1/2" x 2 1/2". Cut four squares of white and four squares of various colors 2 1/2" x 2 1/2".Place the white squares on the colored strips and the colored squares on the white strips. Draw a diagonal line starting at the top right of each of the 8 squares. Sew slightly to the right of the drawn line so your piece will be the right size after you press the seam to one side.

Cut off the excess 1/4" from the seam as shown. Press all seams to the dark.
Lay the pieces out and sew together as shown making four 4 1/2" sets.
Turn the pieces as shown to form a star. Sew together making sure to match
seams so you don't cut off the points of the star. Your square should
measure 8 1/2".
When you sew four squares together you will also have a white star.
Pretty neat, huh?
Block of the Month–Jan/Feb 2016
13 Jan 2016 Leave a comment
The Block of the Month for January/February is a snowflake block.
You will make this block in the month of January to bring to the February meeting.
If you were not at the January meeting, Linda Rowda said to make these snowflakes ridiculous. Her samples were not in the traditional blue/white combinations.
Here are the instructions
Linda has also provided two snowflake patterns.
Enjoy making these blocks. We have a few inches of inspiration just outside our doors!
Place the white squares on the colored strips and the colored squares
on the white strips.
Draw a diagonal line starting at the top right of each of the 8 squares.
Sew slightly to the right of the drawn line so your piece will be the
right size after you press the seam to one side.
